House of International Dialogue and Research

International Summer School Youth and Heritage Stolac

The programme to restore a number of vernacular buildings destroyed or severely damaged during the war as the Houses of International Dialogue and Research (HIDR) in Stolac was initially conceived as a contribution to the development of the International Summer School Youth and Heritage (ISSYH). The first building reconstructed was the HIDR 1, which now serves as the core premises for the activities of the ISSYH programme.

Reconstruction activities are currently ongoing on HIDR 2, which will provide accommodation for students and instructors at the ISSYH. The house dates back to the early eighteenth century, but it was heavily damaged during the recent war. Reconstruction is conducted in accordance to the heritage conservation standards applicable to the war-destroyed living heritage sites.

Following comprehensive investigation, which have included archeological, structural, analyses as well as studies of materials and architectural details, the conservation project has been drafted. The reconstruction of the house is ongoing  and we are currently working on the roof. The roof ridge was put in place on June 20th, 2018, and it was accompanied with the maintaining the intangible heritage attributes. Namely, following Bosnian tradition, the Bosnian designer Muhamed Granov gave the workers a symbolic gift of shirts to mark the occasion. The roofing works on HIDR 2 have been made possible by the kind donations of La Terra Nostra, Municipality of Bosanski Petrovac, Ante Marković company from Srebrenik, Neimari d.o.o from Sarajevo and Sead Džafić from Kalesija.

We encourage our members and friends to join these donors and offer their own material support to the HIDR project and so help us ensure its completion and the provision of a public good of major significance.
